Back to when… Henin scored her last tournament victory

22 April, 08:55

Ahead of the upcoming edition, we look back at some winners from the distant and not so distant past. This time it is the turn of Justine Henin, who took a special title in 2010.

A stylist you might call Justine Henin. The 1.67-metre player from Liege, Belgium, was one of the few women to hit her backhand single handed. She could vary like the best and won no fewer than 43 singles titles in her impressive career.

At all Grand Slam tournaments, Henin played multiple finals. In total, she won seven Grand Slams. In 2003, she grabbed the first spot in the world rankings.

In May 2008, the Walloon suddenly announced she was quitting tennis. After a break of more than a year, the French-speaking Belgian returned to the tour. The game pulled at her.

Grand Slam successes did not materialise, but she still added two WTA titles to her impressive list of honours. She won the 2010 Stuttgart tournament and… ‘Rosmalen’.

On the grass courts of the Autotron ‘s-Hertogenbosch, she was again the strongest nine years after her first final victory in Brabant.

In 2001, she took her fourth WTA title by beating compatriot Kim Clijsters in the final. In 2010, Andrea Petkovic was her opponent in the final match. The German could not prevent Henin from scoring her 43rd(!) and, as it turned out, her last tournament victory.

After the 2011 Australian Open, Henin hung up her rackets for good.
