History
The Libéma Open is an international tennis tournament which is held in Rosmalen, near ‘s-Hertogenbosch. The competitions of the gentlemen, ladies and doubles tournament are played on the outdoor courts of the Autotron ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
Annually the tournament attracts top tennis players and visitors from home and abroad. In the past Lleyton Hewitt, Richard Krajicek, Sjeng Schalken, Tim van Rijthoven, Tallon Griekspoor, Kim Clijsters, Justine Henin and Michaella Krajicek won the international tournament in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Currently the gentlemen singles tournament is part of the ATP World Tour 250 and the ladies tournament is part of the WTA 250-Series.
The first edition of the grass court tournament in Rosmalen took place in 1989 and was considered a test event with eight international players. Miloslav Mečíř, gold medal winner of the 1988 Olympic Games, won on the grass courts of the Autotron ‘s-Hertogenbosch. A year later, in 1990, the tournament was part of the newly established ATP Tour and the tournament was won by Amos Mansdorf. At that time Libéma Open was the only grass court tournament on the European mainland.
In 1996 the ladies single and double competitions were added to the tournament. Anke Huber was the first winner, and Hlasek/Stich (gentlemen) and Neiland/Schultz (ladies) won the doubles competitions.
Up to and including 2014 the tournament was organized one week before Wimbledon and was reckoned as preparation tournament for Wimbledon. From 2015 Libéma Open is organized one week after Roland Garros and is still seen as an ideal preparation for Wimbledon, the world’s largest and leading grass court tournament.
In the past the event was called Heineken Trophy, Ordina Open, UNICEF Open, Topshelf Open and RICOH Open. From 2018 the tournament is called Libéma Open.
